What Are Text Fragments?
Google Chrome includes a feature called “Scroll to Text Fragment.” When you search for a specific question on Google, and Google provides a “Featured Snippet” answer at the top of the search results, clicking that link does not just take you to the top of the webpage.
Instead, Chrome automatically scrolls down the page and highlights the exact sentence you searched for in a bright yellow box. While this can be helpful for finding information quickly on a long article, many users find the aggressive scrolling disorienting and the bright yellow highlighting visually annoying.
How to Stop Chrome from Highlighting Search Results
Because this is a deeply integrated web standards feature pushed by Google, there is no simple toggle in the standard settings menu to turn it off. You must disable it via the hidden Chrome Flags menu.
- Open Google Chrome on your desktop or Android device.
- Type the following into the address bar and press Enter:
chrome://flags- In the search box at the top of the Experiments page, type Text Fragment.
- Look for the flag specifically titled Enable Text Fragment Anchor.
- Click the dropdown menu next to it (which is likely set to “Default”).
- Change the setting to Disabled.
- Click the blue Relaunch button that appears at the bottom of the screen to restart the browser.
Once Chrome reopens, clicking a link from a Google Search will take you to the top of the target webpage normally, without any automatic scrolling or yellow highlighting.
