How to Snooze Emails in Gmail to Schedule Reminders and Manage Your Inbox

Not every email that arrives in your inbox requires an immediate response. Some messages are better dealt with later in the day, tomorrow morning, or next week when a specific deadline approaches. Rather than leaving these emails unread and hoping you remember to act on them, Gmail provides a built-in Snooze feature that temporarily removes the email from your inbox and automatically returns it to the top of your inbox at a date and time you specify. This turns your inbox into a proactive task management system rather than a chaotic stream of messages.

How Gmail Snooze Works Behind the Scenes

When you snooze an email, Gmail moves it out of your inbox view and stores it in a hidden “Snoozed” label. The email effectively disappears from your primary inbox, reducing visual clutter. At the exact date and time you selected, Gmail automatically moves the email back to the top of your inbox and marks it as unread, triggering a notification on your phone or desktop as if it had just arrived. This ensures you see the email precisely when you are ready to take action on it.

Snoozing an Email on Desktop

The snooze function is available directly from the inbox list view and from within an open email.

  1. Open Gmail in your web browser at mail.google.com.
  2. Hover your mouse over the email you want to snooze in the inbox list. A row of small icons will appear on the right side of the email row.
  3. Click the Snooze icon (the clock face).
  4. A menu will appear with preset options: Later today, Tomorrow, This weekend, and Next week.
  5. If none of the presets suit your schedule, click Pick date & time at the bottom of the menu. This opens a calendar view where you can select any future date and specify an exact time down to the minute.
  6. Click Save.

The email will immediately vanish from your inbox. A brief yellow notification bar will appear at the bottom of the screen confirming the snooze and offering an Undo option in case you made an error.

Snoozing an Email on the Gmail Mobile App

The process on the Android and iOS Gmail apps is equally straightforward.

  1. Open the Gmail app on your phone.
  2. In the inbox list, swipe right on the email you want to snooze. By default, swiping right triggers the Snooze action (identifiable by the yellow clock icon that appears as you swipe).
  3. Select your preferred snooze time from the popup menu, or tap Pick date & time for a custom schedule.

If swiping right triggers a different action (such as Archive), you can change the swipe behaviour in Settings > General settings > Swipe actions.

Viewing and Managing All Snoozed Emails

If you want to review every email you have snoozed or cancel a pending snooze before its scheduled return:

  1. In Gmail on desktop, look at the left-hand sidebar and click on Snoozed. On mobile, tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) and tap Snoozed.
  2. You will see a complete list of all snoozed emails along with the date and time each one is scheduled to reappear.
  3. To cancel a snooze and return the email to your inbox immediately, open the email and click the Snooze icon again, then select Unsnooze.

Strategic Uses for the Snooze Feature

The Snooze feature is most effective when used as part of an “Inbox Zero” workflow. Process every new email immediately: reply to anything that takes less than two minutes, archive anything that requires no action, and snooze anything that requires a future response. By snoozing a client follow-up to Friday afternoon, you guarantee the email will resurface at the exact moment you need to write the response, eliminating the need for manual reminders or sticky notes.
