How to Wrap Text in Google Sheets

When you type long sentences or paragraphs into a single cell in Google Sheets, the text will naturally spill over into the adjacent empty cells on the right. If the adjacent cells contain data, your text will be visually cut off and hidden. To keep your spreadsheet neat and ensure all text is visible within its own cell boundaries, you need to use the Text Wrapping feature.

How to Wrap Text

  • Highlight the cell, column, or row containing the text you want to wrap. (You can click the grey rectangle in the top-left corner of the sheet to select the entire spreadsheet).
  • Look for the Text wrapping icon in the top toolbar. It looks like an arrow pointing to the right, then wrapping down and pointing left. (If you don’t see it, click the “More” button with three dots).
  • Click the icon to reveal three options: Overflow, Wrap, and Clip.
  • Select Wrap (the middle icon with the curved arrow).

Alternatively, you can access this via the top menu bar by clicking Format > Wrapping > Wrap.

Understanding Wrapping Options

Google Sheets offers three different text behaviours:

  • Overflow (Default): The text will cross over the cell border and continue into the empty cells to the right.
  • Wrap: The cell will automatically expand its vertical height, forcing the text onto multiple lines so everything remains visible without changing the column’s width.
  • Clip: The text will be cut off precisely at the cell border. The hidden text is still there and can be viewed in the formula bar when the cell is selected, but it won’t clutter your spreadsheet view.
