How to Convert Seconds to Hours, Minutes, and Seconds in Google Sheets

When exporting event logs, telephone call records, YouTube analytics, or fitness tracker data into Google Sheets, time intervals are almost always stored as raw elapsed seconds (such as 3745 or 86400). While raw numbers work well for database storage, they are difficult for humans to read and interpret at a glance.

Google Sheets provides two primary methods to convert raw integer seconds into a clean, human-readable hh:mm:ss format: direct division combined with custom duration formatting, or standard mathematical formulas.

Method 1: The 86,400 Division Trick (Recommended)

Internally, Google Sheets treats one whole day as the integer value 1. Because a 24-hour day contains exactly 86,400 seconds (24 hours × 60 minutes × 60 seconds), dividing any quantity of seconds by 86,400 converts that value into a standard Google Sheets serial time unit.

  1. Assuming your raw second value is located in cell A2, click into cell B2 and enter the following formula:
=A2 / 86400
  1. Press Enter. At first, Google Sheets will display a decimal value (e.g. 3600 / 86400 = 0.041667).
  2. With cell B2 selected, click Format in the top menu bar.
  3. Navigate to Number > Duration.

Google Sheets will instantly reformat the decimal into a clean 01:00:00 duration format. If your elapsed time exceeds 24 hours (such as 100,000 seconds), the Duration format correctly displays cumulative hours (e.g. 27:46:40) rather than rolling over to zero like a standard clock.

Method 2: Use the TIME Function (For Durations Under 24 Hours)

If you prefer an explicit formula that converts seconds into hours, minutes, and remaining seconds for intervals under 24 hours, use the TIME function combined with integer division:

  1. In an adjacent cell, enter the following formula:
=TIME(INT(A2 / 3600), INT(MOD(A2, 3600) / 60), MOD(A2, 60))

Here is how this formula calculates each component:

  • INT(A2 / 3600): Calculates total full hours.
  • INT(MOD(A2, 3600) / 60): Takes the remaining seconds after hours are subtracted and divides by 60 to calculate minutes.
  • MOD(A2, 60): Returns the leftover remainder seconds.

Method 3: Output as a Text String (e.g., “1h 15m 30s”)

If you need your converted duration to display with descriptive textual units for executive reports or client dashboards:

=INT(A2 / 3600) & "h " & INT(MOD(A2, 3600) / 60) & "m " & MOD(A2, 60) & "s"

For an input of 4530, this formula generates a polished, self-explanatory readout of 1h 15m 30s that can be copied directly into emails or presentation slides.
