Most digital to-do lists rely on time-based alarms. You set a reminder to “Buy Milk” for 5:00 PM, but if you get stuck in traffic and do not arrive at the grocery store until 5:45 PM, the alarm has already gone off and been dismissed, meaning you will likely forget the milk anyway. Google Keep solves this problem by offering highly accurate, GPS-based location reminders. Instead of triggering at a specific time, the note will only alert you the exact moment you physically walk through the doors of a specific location.
How to Set a Location Reminder on Mobile
Because this feature relies heavily on physical GPS coordinates, it is easiest to configure using the Google Keep mobile app on your iPhone or Android device.
- Open the Google Keep app and tap on the specific note or checklist you want to use (e.g., your grocery list).
- Look at the top right corner of the screen and tap the Bell icon (the Reminder button).
- A small menu will slide up from the bottom. Tap Choose a place.
- A search bar will appear, connected directly to Google Maps. Type the name of the specific business or the exact street address (e.g., “Target on Main Street”).
- Select the correct location from the autocomplete list. A tiny map preview will appear to confirm the location.
- Tap Save.
How Location Reminders Actually Work
Once saved, a small map pin icon containing the address will attach itself to the bottom of your note. You can now close the app entirely. Google Keep will silently monitor your smartphone’s background GPS data.
Whether you visit that store later today, tomorrow, or three weeks from now, the moment your phone detects that you have physically entered the GPS perimeter of that specific address, Google Keep will immediately push a high-priority notification to your lock screen, reminding you to look at your grocery list.
Important Note: For this feature to work, you must ensure that your smartphone’s operating system (iOS or Android) has granted the Google Keep app permission to access your location “Always” or “While using the app.” If you have strictly disabled location services for privacy reasons, these reminders will fail to trigger.
