How to Secure Your Google Account with Passkeys

For decades, passwords have been the weakest link in digital security. Even if you use a long, complex password, it can still be stolen in a data breach, intercepted by a phishing email, or guessed by a brute-force attack. To permanently solve this problem, the technology industry is moving toward a new, passwordless standard known as Passkeys.

Google has fully embraced this technology, allowing you to secure your entire Google Account without ever typing a password again. By switching to passkeys, you replace your vulnerable text password with the cryptographic security of your smartphone or computer’s built-in biometric sensors (like Face ID, Touch ID, or Windows Hello).

What Exactly is a Passkey?

A passkey is a digital credential tied directly to your physical device. When you create a passkey for your Google Account on your iPhone, for example, your phone generates a unique cryptographic key pair.

The public half of the key is sent to Google’s servers, while the private half remains securely locked inside the secure enclave chip of your iPhone. The private key never leaves your device. When you try to log into Google, their server issues a cryptographic challenge. Your phone uses its private key to solve the challenge, but only after you authenticate locally using Face ID or your device PIN.

Because the private key never travels across the internet, passkeys are entirely immune to phishing attacks. Even if a hacker builds a fake Google login page, there is no password for them to steal.

How to Create a Passkey for Your Google Account

Setting up a passkey is surprisingly simple, but you must do it from a device that supports biometric authentication, such as a modern smartphone (iOS or Android) or a laptop with fingerprint/facial recognition (macOS or Windows 11).

  1. Open a web browser on your smartphone or computer and navigate to myaccount.google.com.
  2. Log in using your current Google email address and password.
  3. Select the Security tab from the navigation menu.
  4. Scroll down to the How you sign in to Google section.
  5. Click on Passkeys and security keys.
  6. You may be prompted to enter your password one more time to verify your identity.
  7. Click the Create a passkey button.
  8. A system prompt will appear on your screen asking you to authenticate. This prompt comes directly from your operating system (Apple, Android, or Windows), not from Google.
  9. Use your fingerprint, face scan, or device PIN to confirm the creation of the passkey.

Google will now register your device. The next time you log into your Google Account, you will simply enter your email address and use your fingerprint or face to gain immediate access.

What Happens if You Lose Your Device?

One of the biggest concerns users have about passkeys is what happens if their phone is lost or stolen. Fortunately, passkeys are designed with recovery in mind.

First, if your phone is stolen, the thief cannot use your passkey because it is protected by your face or fingerprint. They cannot extract the cryptographic key from the hardware.

Second, passkeys are automatically backed up and synced to your ecosystem cloud account. If you create a passkey on an iPhone, it is securely synced to iCloud Keychain. When you buy a replacement iPhone and log into your Apple ID, your Google passkey will automatically be restored, allowing you to log in instantly.

Similarly, Android passkeys are synced via Google Password Manager, and Windows passkeys can be synced via Windows Hello or third-party password managers like 1Password.

Can You Still Use Passwords?

Yes. Currently, creating a passkey does not permanently delete your traditional password. Google treats passkeys as a primary, significantly faster alternative. If you attempt to log in from a device that does not support passkeys (such as an older public library computer), Google will simply ask for your traditional password and any standard two-factor authentication you have configured.

However, by making passkeys your primary login method, you dramatically reduce your daily exposure to phishing attacks and drastically speed up your workflow across the Google ecosystem.
