How to Restore Deleted Contacts in Google Contacts

If you accidentally delete an important phone number from your Android device, or if a syncing error completely wipes out your address book across all your devices, the situation is not immediately catastrophic. Because Android phones sync directly with the cloud, those numbers are managed by Google Contacts.

Google anticipates accidental deletions and provides two robust recovery mechanisms: a 30-day “Trash” bin for individual deleted contacts, and a powerful “Undo Changes” feature that can roll your entire address book back in time to fix massive syncing disasters.

Method 1: Recover Individual Contacts from the Trash

When you delete a contact on your phone or computer, Google does not erase it immediately. It moves the contact to a hidden Trash folder, where it waits for 30 days before being permanently destroyed.

On a Computer (Recommended)

1. Open a web browser and navigate to contacts.google.com.
2. Log in with the exact Google Account linked to your smartphone.
3. Look at the left-hand navigation menu. Scroll down to the very bottom and click on Trash.
4. You will see a list of every contact deleted in the last 30 days, along with the exact date and device they were deleted from.
5. Hover your mouse over the contact you want to restore and check the small box that appears next to their profile picture. (You can check multiple boxes to restore several at once).
6. Click the blue Recover button at the top right of the screen.

On an Android Phone

1. Open the official Contacts app (the one provided by Google, not a carrier-specific app).
2. Tap the Fix & manage tab at the bottom of the screen.
3. Tap on Trash.
4. Find the deleted contact, long-press it to select it, tap the three dots in the top right corner, and select Recover.

Method 2: The “Undo Changes” Time Machine

If you didn’t just delete one contact, but rather 500 contacts suddenly vanished due to a glitch, or a rogue app completely scrambled all your names and numbers, digging through the Trash is inefficient. Instead, you can use the “Undo Changes” feature.

This feature acts like a time machine for your entire address book. You can tell Google, “Reset my contacts to exactly how they looked yesterday at 3:00 PM.”

Note: This must be done from a web browser on a computer.

1. Go to contacts.google.com.
2. Look at the very top right corner of the screen and click the Gear icon (Settings).
3. Click on Undo changes from the dropdown menu.
4. A dialog box will appear asking you how far back you want to travel in time. You can select:
   • 10 min ago
   • 1 hr ago
   • Yesterday
   • 1 week ago
   • Custom: (Allows you to specify any exact day and time within the last 30 days).
5. Select the timeframe from before the disaster occurred (e.g., Yesterday).
6. Click Undo.

Google will instantly restore your entire contact list to that exact moment in time, recovering any deleted numbers and erasing any erroneous changes made since then. Within a few minutes, these restored contacts will sync wirelessly back down to your Android smartphone.
