Handing your smartphone to a friend, colleague, or family member to show off holiday pictures frequently leads to that familiar pang of anxiety. A casual swipe to the left or right can inadvertently reveal private documents, sensitive medical receipts, financial statements, or personal family photographs stored in your primary camera stream. Google Photos addresses this privacy challenge directly with its built-in Locked Folder feature.
Locked Folder provides an encrypted, password-protected compartment within Google Photos. Items moved to the Locked Folder are completely hidden from your main photo grid, search results, shared albums, memories, and third-party applications. This guide explains how to configure Locked Folder, move existing media into it, capture pictures directly into secure storage, and manage optional cloud backup settings.
How Locked Folder Safeguards Your Media
Unlike standard albums or archived pictures, the Locked Folder operates under strict security protocols enforced by your operating system’s hardware-backed key store:
- Authentication Protection: Accessing the folder requires your device screen lock—such as your fingerprint, Face Unlock, or PIN.
- Invisible to Other Apps: Media inside the Locked Folder is not exposed to social media apps, file managers, or messaging tools.
- Removed from Automated Features: Hidden pictures never surface in automated Memories widgets, “On this day” carousels, or search suggestions.
- Restricted Device Actions: Screen recording and screenshots are automatically blocked while viewing content inside the Locked Folder.
Setting Up Locked Folder in Google Photos
The initial configuration takes less than two minutes on any modern Android device running Android 6.0 or newer, as well as on iOS via the Google Photos app.
- Open the Google Photos app on your device.
- Tap the Library tab (or Collections on newer app versions) located in the bottom navigation bar.
- Select Utilities from the top options, then tap Locked Folder under the “Organise your library” heading.
- Tap Set up Locked Folder at the bottom of the informational splash screen.
- Confirm your identity by scanning your fingerprint, using Face Unlock, or entering your device PIN/passcode.
Once verified, the empty folder is established and ready to accept media.
Moving Existing Photos and Videos to Locked Folder
You can move photos from your main grid or individual albums into the Locked Folder at any time:
- Navigate to your main Photos grid.
- Touch and hold the first photo or video you wish to conceal, then tap additional thumbnails to select multiple items.
- Tap the three-dot menu (or More) icon in the top right corner.
- Select Move to Locked Folder from the action sheet.
- A confirmation prompt will explain that copies in shared albums or device backups will be removed; tap Move to confirm.
The selected items will disappear immediately from your camera roll and transfer into secure local storage.
Saving Directly from the Pixel Camera to Locked Folder
If you use a Google Pixel phone, you can bypass the public camera roll entirely when snapping sensitive pictures:
- Open the native Pixel Camera app.
- In the top right corner (or adjacent to the shutter button), tap the photo frame / gallery icon.
- Switch the storage destination from Photo Gallery to Locked Folder.
- Take your photographs or record your video clips as normal.
All footage captured while this toggle is active routes directly into encrypted storage without ever appearing on your standard timeline.
Managing Cloud Backup for Locked Folder Items
Historically, Locked Folder files were strictly stored locally on the physical device. If your handset was lost, factory reset, or damaged, those images were permanently lost. Google has since introduced an optional, end-to-end encrypted cloud backup option for Locked Folder:
- Enable Cloud Backup: Open the Locked Folder, tap the Cloud icon in the top right corner, and switch on Backup. Your items will sync across devices where you log in with your Google Account and authenticate with your lock code.
- Keep Strictly Offline: If you prefer sensitive media to never touch cloud servers, leave this toggle disabled. Remember that you must manually move files out of the Locked Folder before switching devices or performing a factory reset.
Moving Items Back to the Standard Photo Grid
If an item no longer requires confidential handling, restoring it takes seconds:
- Open Google Photos > Collections > Locked Folder and authenticate.
- Select the relevant photos or video clips.
- Tap Move at the bottom of the screen.
- Confirm by tapping Move once more.
The files will return to their chronological positions in your primary timeline based on their original capture dates.
