How to Add and Edit Captions and Descriptions on Photos in Google Photos

While Google Photos automatically detects faces, pets, locations, and objects using computer vision, automated algorithms cannot record personal memories—such as who attended a family celebration, the historical context of an old scanned photo, or specific travel notes. Adding manual captions and text descriptions directly into Google Photos enriches your photo collection, preserves sentimental memories, and allows you to locate specific pictures in seconds using custom keyword searches.

How Captions Work in Google Photos

When you add a caption or description to an image in Google Photos, the text is attached to the media’s cloud metadata record. When downloading photos or exporting your library via Google Takeout, captions are preserved inside JSON metadata sidecars or written into Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) description headers. Furthermore, any text you type into the caption field becomes immediately searchable in the Google Photos search bar.

Adding and Editing Captions in Google Photos on the Web

Editing descriptions in your desktop web browser is quick and convenient for batch archiving:

  1. Navigate to Google Photos.
  2. Click on any photo or video to open it in full-screen view.
  3. Click on the Info icon (the letter “i” inside a circle) in the top-right toolbar (or press the keyboard shortcut i).
  4. An information sidebar will slide out from the right.
  5. At the top of the sidebar, click on the text reading Add a description.
  6. Type your caption (e.g., “Grandma’s 80th birthday dinner with cousins in Edinburgh”).
  7. Press Enter or click away to save.
  8. You can re-click the text field at any time to edit wording or correct typos.

Adding Captions on Android and iPhone

Managing captions on your smartphone or tablet takes just a swipe:

  1. Open the Google Photos app on your Android or iOS device.
  2. Tap to open any photo or video.
  3. Swipe upward on the image (or tap the three vertical dots menu in the top-right corner).
  4. Underneath the photo preview, tap on Add a caption…
  5. Type your description using the virtual keyboard.
  6. Tap the blue checkmark icon (✓) or tap back to save.

Searching Photos by Your Custom Captions

Once you attach descriptions, locating memories requires no manual album scrolling:

  1. Open the Google Photos search bar.
  2. Type any unique word or phrase from your caption (for instance, “Edinburgh” or “80th birthday”).
  3. Google Photos instantly filters your library, surfacing every photo containing that exact term in its description.

Collaborative Captions in Shared Albums

When sharing collaborative albums with family and friends:

  • Captions you assign to photos are visible to album members who view image details.
  • In shared albums, collaborators can also use the album comment section to leave conversational notes without overwriting the photo’s master description.
