How to Use Offline Mode to Access Notes in Google Keep

Google Keep is fundamentally a cloud-based application. By default, it constantly syncs your notes, checklists, and drawings to Google’s central servers. This seamless syncing is incredibly convenient when jumping between your phone and your laptop, but it creates a massive problem if you are boarding a Wi-Fi-free airplane or commuting on a subway with zero cellular reception. Fortunately, you can configure Google Keep to operate in a robust “Offline Mode,” allowing you to read, edit, and create notes without any internet connection.

How Offline Mode Works on Mobile Devices

If you are using the Google Keep app on an Android or iOS smartphone, Offline Mode requires absolutely zero configuration. It is built directly into the app’s architecture.

When you open the app without an internet connection, it simply loads the most recent version of your notes that was cached to your phone’s local storage. You can open any note, check off grocery items, delete paragraphs, or even create entirely new notes from scratch. The app will save all of these changes locally to your phone’s memory. The moment you step off the subway and your phone reconnects to a cellular tower, the app will silently execute a “sync” in the background, pushing all of your offline changes up to the Google servers.

How to Enable Offline Mode on a Computer

Offline Mode on a desktop or laptop computer is vastly different. Because you access Keep through a web browser (keep.google.com), you cannot simply turn off your Wi-Fi and expect the webpage to load. You must explicitly configure Google Chrome to cache the web app.

  1. Open the Google Chrome web browser on your computer. (This feature is exclusive to Chrome and Chromium-based browsers; it will not work in Safari or Firefox).
  2. Navigate to the Chrome Web Store and ensure you have installed the official Google Keep Chrome Extension.
  3. Navigate to keep.google.com while you still have an active internet connection.
  4. Look at the top right corner of the Keep interface and click the Gear icon (Settings).
  5. Click Settings from the drop-down menu.
  6. Locate the Enable Offline toggle switch and turn it on.

Accessing Notes Without Wi-Fi

Once you have enabled the setting, Google Chrome will download a hidden, localized copy of your entire Keep database to your hard drive. If you are sitting on an airplane with your laptop in airplane mode, do not attempt to type the URL into the address bar. Instead, click the Google Keep extension icon in your Chrome toolbar, or navigate to chrome://apps and click the Keep icon. The full interface will load instantly from your hard drive, allowing you to edit notes perfectly. Just like the mobile app, it will sync your changes the second you connect to hotel Wi-Fi.
