How to Create and Manage Polls and Q&A Sessions in Google Meet

Holding large remote meetings, team all-hands calls, webinars, or university lectures in Google Meet can easily turn into passive one-way presentations. Gathering real-time feedback and addressing audience questions verbally often leads to participants speaking over one another or cluttering the primary chat stream. Google Meet integrates dedicated Polls and Q&A features within its Activities panel, allowing hosts to collect structured participant sentiment, run anonymous votes, and moderate audience inquiries with upvoting.

Overview of Polls and Q&A Capabilities

These interactive features are available across Google Workspace enterprise, business, and education tiers:

  • Interactive Live Polls: Present multiple-choice questions to attendees in real time, with the option to display live percentages or keep results private until voting concludes.
  • Anonymous Polling: Allow participants to vote anonymously to encourage candid feedback on sensitive topics.
  • Moderated Q&A Channels: Attendees submit questions into a dedicated thread where other participants can upvote the most relevant topics.
  • Host Moderation Controls: Hosts and co-hosts can review incoming questions before they appear publicly, hide irrelevant inquiries, or mark answered questions as resolved.
  • Automated Post-Meeting Analytics: Meet automatically emails the host detailed Excel and CSV spreadsheets summarizing all poll responses and submitted questions after the call ends.

Step 1: Access the Activities Panel in Google Meet

Both tools are organized under Google Meet’s Activities drawer:

  1. Join or start your meeting in Google Meet on the web.
  2. Look at the bottom-right control toolbar and click the Activities button (represented by triangle, square, and circle geometric shapes).
  3. The Activities sidebar expands, displaying tools such as Polls, Q&A, Breakout rooms, and Whiteboarding.

Step 2: Create and Launch a Live Poll

To collect immediate feedback from your meeting attendees:

  1. Click Polls in the Activities menu.
  2. Click Start a poll.
  3. Type your question into the question box (e.g. “Which release date fits your team schedule best?”).
  4. Enter the selectable choices in the option fields. Click Add option to include additional choices.
  5. Configure poll privacy settings:
    • Toggle Responses are anonymous on if you want participants to vote without names attached to their choices.
    • Toggle Show everyone the results to determine whether attendees can view live percentage bars.
  6. Click Launch to broadcast the poll immediately to all attendees. (Alternatively, click Save to keep the poll prepared as a draft to trigger later in your presentation).

Step 3: Monitor and End Polls

Once launched, participants receive a banner notification prompt to vote:

  • Hosts see live vote tallies updating in real time inside the Polls drawer.
  • When voting is complete, click End poll to lock responses. Once closed, no further votes can be cast, but attendees can still review the final percentage breakdown if public results were enabled.
  • To remove the poll from view, click the Trash icon.

Step 4: Enable and Manage Audience Q&A

To manage inquiries during a presentation without losing questions in chat chatter:

  1. In the Activities sidebar, click Q&A.
  2. Click Turn on Q&A.
  3. To prevent inappropriate or off-topic submissions, click the Settings gear icon inside the Q&A panel and toggle Moderate questions to On.

Reviewing and Moderating Submissions

When moderation is active, submitted questions appear in the Needs review tab:

  • Approve: Click the Checkmark to publish the question to the entire meeting. Once approved, attendees can click the Upvote (thumbs-up) icon to prioritize urgent questions.
  • Reject / Hide: Click the Hide (eye icon) or Delete button to discard questions that do not pertain to the meeting topic.
  • Mark as Answered: As you address each inquiry verbally during the call, click the Checkmark icon beside the question to mark it as answered, moving it down the queue.

Step 5: Review Post-Meeting Spreadsheets

When a meeting that used Polls or Q&A concludes, Google Meet automatically compiles the data:

  1. Check the meeting organizer’s Gmail inbox a few minutes after ending the call.
  2. Open the automated email with the subject “Poll results for…” or “Q&A results for…”.
  3. Open the attached Google Sheets document to review a complete audit log, including participant names (unless set to anonymous), timestamps, exact votes cast, and all submitted questions with upvote counts.

Best Practices for Virtual Audience Engagement

To maximize attendee participation, prepare poll drafts before the meeting begins by joining the room early. When addressing Q&A, sort the thread by Most upvoted rather than chronological order to guarantee that issues affecting the broadest group of stakeholders are resolved first.
