How to Configure Breakout Rooms and In-Call Activities in Google Meet

Facilitating interactive virtual classrooms, agile sprint retrospectives, and corporate training seminars requires transitioning participants from passive video consumption into focused small-group discussions. In Google Workspace, Google Meet includes native Breakout Rooms alongside in-call interactive activities (live polls, structured Q&A sessions, and collaborative Jamboard/Miro whiteboards). Configuring these activities smoothly ensures seamless group collaboration without conference disruption.

Host Privileges and Workspace Edition Requirements

Breakout room management requires specific Google Workspace account licensing:

  • Supported Editions: Google Workspace Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Essentials/Standard/Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Education Plus editions.
  • Host Management: Only the primary meeting organizer or designated co-hosts can configure, launch, and monitor breakout rooms. Participants cannot spawn rooms independently.
  • Browser Requirement: Room configuration controls require desktop Google Chrome or modern Chromium browsers. Attendees can participate from mobile devices or hardware conference rooms.

Configuring Breakout Rooms During an Active Meeting

To divide meeting attendees into focused sub-sessions:

  1. In the active Google Meet window, click the Activities icon (represented by a triangle, square, and circle) in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Click Breakout rooms.
  3. Click Set up breakout rooms.
  4. Choose the desired number of rooms (up to 100 rooms supported).
  5. Select assignment distribution:
    • Shuffle: Randomly distributes participants across rooms.
    • Clear: Empties rooms to allow manual drag-and-drop participant assignment.
  6. Set an optional Timer (e.g., 15 minutes). When the countdown expires, participants receive a 30-second warning banner before rooms close automatically.
  7. Click Open rooms. Attendees receive an on-screen invite to enter their assigned private room.

Broadcasting Messages and Visiting Active Breakout Rooms

Hosts retain oversight across all active rooms:

  • Joining Rooms: In the Breakout rooms panel, click Join next to any room to enter and observe the discussion. Click Leave to return to the main lobby.
  • Broadcasting Announcements: Click Broadcast announcement, type your update (e.g., “Two minutes remaining—finalize your top 3 points”), and send. The text banner flashes across all rooms simultaneously.
  • Closing Sessions: Click Close rooms to recall all attendees to the primary meeting space immediately.

Engaging Audiences with Live Polls and Moderated Q&A

Combine breakout discussions with structured feedback tools:

  1. Click Activities > Polls > Start a poll. Input your question and options, toggle on Show results to everyone if desired, and click Launch.
  2. Click Activities > Q&A and toggle on Allow questions. Participants can submit questions and upvote peer submissions, allowing hosts to address the highest-voted inquiries in order.

Mastering breakout room administration and in-call activities empowers facilitators to conduct high-impact, engaging virtual collaboration across Google Meet.
