When you ask Google Maps for turn-by-turn directions, it calculates the distance based on actual roads, motorways, and walking paths. But there is a useful hidden feature that lets you measure the precise straight-line distance — often called “as the crow flies” — between any two points on the map. This is ideal for property surveys, outdoor activity planning, geography questions, or simply satisfying your curiosity about how far two locations actually are from each other in a direct line.
What Is “As the Crow Flies” Distance?
The straight-line distance between two points is the shortest possible distance between them, ignoring all roads, terrain, water, and other obstacles. It is the mathematical distance a bird would fly if it travelled in a perfectly straight line. This measurement is particularly useful for:
- Measuring property boundaries or field dimensions
- Understanding true distances between cities for geography and travel planning
- Planning outdoor activities like hiking or cycling routes across terrain
- Calculating how far your home is from a new school, hospital, or workplace
How to Measure Distance on a Computer (Web Browser)
- Open Google Maps in your web browser.
- Navigate and zoom into the area where your starting point is located.
- Right-click on your exact starting point on the map. A dropdown context menu will appear.
- Click Measure distance from the menu options.
- A small black circle will appear at your starting point. Now click anywhere else on the map to set your destination. A straight line will connect the two points automatically.
- Look at the small white information card that appears at the bottom of the screen. It displays the exact straight-line distance in both miles and kilometres simultaneously.
Adding multiple measurement points: You can continue clicking additional points on the map to trace a path with multiple segments — for example, to measure the perimeter of a field or to trace a custom walking route across open terrain. Google Maps will display the total cumulative distance of all segments combined. You can drag any of the white circles to reposition a point, or click on a circle to delete it and remove that segment from the calculation.
How to Measure Distance on the Mobile App
- Open the Google Maps app on your iPhone or Android device.
- Navigate to the area you want to measure and zoom to the appropriate level.
- Touch and hold your finger on the map at your starting point (press and hold for about one second). Do not tap on an existing pin, business name, or road label — find an empty area of the map. A red dropped pin will appear.
- At the bottom of the screen, a card will appear showing information about the dropped pin. Tap on the name of the dropped pin or swipe the card upward to expand it.
- In the expanded menu, tap Measure distance.
- A black crosshair target circle will appear fixed in the centre of your screen. To set the destination, move the map itself by dragging it with your finger until the crosshair is positioned over your target location.
- The distance is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen and updates in real time as you drag the map.
- To add another measurement segment and continue the path, tap the “+” (Plus) button in the lower-right corner.
