How to Insert Section Breaks for Advanced Pagination in Google Docs

When formatting a professional report or an academic thesis in Google Docs, you often encounter situations where you need different formatting on different pages. For example, you might want your Title Page to have no page number, your Table of Contents to use Roman numerals (i, ii, iii), and the main body of your document to start at page 1 using standard Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3). Alternatively, you might need one specific page in the middle of your document to be oriented horizontally (Landscape) to accommodate a wide data table, while the rest of the document remains vertical (Portrait). These complex layouts are impossible using standard page breaks. You must use Section Breaks to divide your document into distinct, independently formattable zones.

Understanding the Difference Between Page Breaks and Section Breaks

A standard Page Break (inserted by pressing Ctrl+Enter) simply pushes all following text to the top of the next physical piece of paper. However, the entire document remains linked. If you change the margins or header on page two, page one will also change.

A Section Break tells Google Docs that the document is now split into two separate compartments. You can apply a completely different set of rules (margins, page numbers, orientation, columns) to Section 2 without affecting Section 1.

How to Insert a Section Break

  1. Place your blinking text cursor at the exact point in your document where you want the new formatting rules to begin (for example, at the very end of your Table of Contents).
  2. Click the Insert tab on the top menu bar.
  3. Hover over Break to open the sub-menu.
  4. You will see two options:
    • Section break (next page): This pushes the text to a new page AND starts a new section. This is the most common choice for chapters.
    • Section break (continuous): This starts a new section immediately on the same page. This is used if you want to split a single page into two columns halfway down the page.
  5. Select Section break (next page).

A blue dotted line will briefly appear to indicate the break has been inserted.

Decoupling Headers and Page Numbers

If you are trying to restart page numbering, inserting the section break is only half the battle. By default, Google Docs links the headers and footers of new sections to the previous sections so you don’t have to retype them.

  1. Double-click in the header or footer area of the new section (e.g., page 2).
  2. A small checkbox will appear on the right side of the screen labelled Link to previous. Uncheck this box.
  3. Now, you can delete the page number from Section 1 (the title page) without it deleting from Section 2.
  4. To restart the numbering in Section 2, click Options > Page numbers inside the footer, and select Start at: 1.

Changing Page Orientation for a Single Section

If you need to make a single page landscape for a wide chart:

  1. Insert a Section Break before the chart, and another Section Break immediately after the chart. This isolates the chart onto its own distinct section.
  2. Click anywhere on the page containing the chart.
  3. Click Format > Page orientation.
  4. Select Landscape.
  5. Under the “Apply to” dropdown, ensure it says This section (not Whole document).
  6. Click OK. Only that specific page will turn sideways, while the rest of the document remains portrait.
