Typing a standard essay in Google Docs is straightforward, but if you are writing a chemistry lab report or a mathematics assignment, the standard keyboard layout falls short. You cannot accurately represent the chemical formula for water as H2O; the “2” must be lowered below the baseline (subscript). Similarly, Einstein’s famous equation cannot be written as E=mc2; the “2” must be raised (superscript) to indicate an exponent. While you could copy and paste these specialized characters from Wikipedia, Google Docs includes built-in formatting shortcuts and a dedicated equation editor to handle complex mathematical and scientific typography natively.
Applying Subscript and Superscript Formatting
If you only need to format a few simple characters—such as writing H₂O, calculating an area in cm², or adding a trademark symbol (™)—the fastest method is to use standard text formatting.
- Type your text normally (e.g., type “H2O”).
- Use your mouse to highlight only the specific character you want to change (highlight the “2”).
- Click the Format tab on the top menu bar.
- Hover over Text to open the sub-menu.
- Click Subscript (to lower the number) or Superscript (to raise it).
Keyboard Shortcuts for Faster Typing
If you are typing a long document with frequent chemical formulas, using the mouse menu is tedious. Memorize these keyboard shortcuts instead:
- Superscript (X²): Press

Pressing the shortcut once activates the mode. Type your number, then press the exact same shortcut again to return your cursor to normal text mode.
Using the Equation Editor for Complex Math
Simple text formatting works for exponents, but it cannot handle complex mathematical notation like fractions, square roots, integrals, or Greek letters (like Pi or Sigma). For these, you must use the Equation tool.
- Place your cursor where you want the formula to appear.
- Click the Insert tab on the top menu bar.
- Select Equation from the dropdown menu.
- A small, blue bounding box will appear in your document, and a new “Equation” toolbar will appear just below the main menu.
- Click the Math operations icon (it looks like a square root symbol) on the new toolbar to open a dropdown menu of complex structures.
- Select the Fraction template (it looks like a/b).
- Your cursor will appear in the top (numerator) half of the fraction. Type your top number, then press the Right Arrow key on your keyboard to jump down to the bottom (denominator) half to finish the fraction.
The Equation editor allows you to nest these templates infinitely, meaning you can place a superscript inside a square root, which is itself the numerator of a massive fraction, allowing you to recreate even the most complex university-level calculus equations perfectly.
