When creating a complex table in Google Sheets, you often run into a common formatting problem: the header titles for your columns are significantly longer than the actual data inside the columns. If you make the column wide enough to fit the header, you waste a massive amount of horizontal screen space. If you wrap the text, the header row becomes awkwardly tall.
The most elegant solution is to rotate the text in your header row diagonally. This allows you to keep your columns perfectly narrow while still making the long titles easy to read.
How to Rotate Text Diagonally
Google Sheets includes a built-in text rotation tool directly on the main toolbar.
- Open your Google Sheet and click and drag your mouse to highlight the cells containing the headers you want to rotate.
- Look at the main toolbar at the top of the screen (where the bold, italic, and alignment buttons are).
- Find the Text rotation icon. It looks like a capital ‘A’ with a small, angled arrow pointing up and to the right.
- Click the Text rotation icon to open a drop-down menu of options.
- Select the Tilt up option (an ‘A’ angled at exactly 45 degrees).
Your text will instantly angle upwards, and Google Sheets will automatically adjust the height of the row to accommodate the new diagonal text. You can now resize your columns to be much narrower, and the diagonal text will stay perfectly readable.
How to Set a Custom Rotation Angle
If the default 45-degree tilt does not look quite right for your specific spreadsheet, you can specify an exact custom angle.
- Highlight the cells again and click the Text rotation icon on the toolbar.
- At the very bottom of the drop-down menu, you will see a box with a number in it (likely “45°”).
- Click inside this box and type a custom number between -90 and 90.
- A positive number (like 60) tilts the text upwards.
- A negative number (like -60) tilts the text downwards.
- Press Enter to apply the custom angle.
Using diagonal text is an excellent way to make large, data-heavy financial or attendance spreadsheets look significantly more professional and easier to navigate.
