The Green Squiggles
Google Docs features a sophisticated, AI-driven grammar checking system. As you type, the editor constantly analyzes your sentence structure, verb tense, and phrasing. When it detects what it considers an error or a stylistic misstep, it aggressively highlights the text with a squiggly green or blue line. While this is helpful for casual writing, it can be a nightmare for creative writers, poets, or professionals drafting highly technical documents containing industry-specific jargon. The AI often misinterprets complex sentences or stylistic choices as errors, cluttering your document with distracting highlights that break your concentration and visual flow.
Silencing the Grammar AI
To maintain a clean writing environment and stop Google Docs from automatically suggesting grammar fixes with colored underlines, you must disable the real-time grammar checking tool.
Open the Google Doc where the grammar suggestions are appearing. Go to the top menu bar and click on Tools. Scroll down the dropdown menu and select Spelling and grammar. A secondary menu will expand to the right. Look for the option explicitly named Show grammar suggestions. If it has a checkmark next to it, the real-time AI is active. Click on Show grammar suggestions to uncheck it. The moment you do this, all the green and blue squiggly lines will instantly vanish from your entire document. Note that this only disables the visual grammar check; if you still want to check your work later, you can manually run the tool by clicking “Spelling and grammar check” from that same menu.
