The Unwanted Formatting
Google Docs is equipped with a highly responsive auto-formatting engine. One of its most aggressive features is automatic list creation. If you start a new paragraph by typing an asterisk (*), a dash (-), or the number one followed by a period (1.), and then hit the spacebar, Google Docs will instantly assume you are trying to create a bulleted or numbered list. It will automatically indent the text, insert a formal bullet point, and continue the list formatting on subsequent lines. While useful for rapid note-taking, it is incredibly frustrating when you are trying to write a specific technical sequence, format a script, or simply use an asterisk for emphasis without triggering a massive formatting shift.
Disabling the Auto-Lists
To retain full manual control over your document’s structure and stop Google Docs from automatically starting a new list when you type specific characters, you must adjust the core formatting preferences.
Open your Google Doc. Look at the primary menu bar across the top of the screen and click on Tools. From the dropdown menu, select Preferences. A settings dialogue box will appear in the center of your screen. Ensure you are on the General tab (not the Substitutions tab). Scan the list of formatting options for the specific checkbox labelled Automatically detect lists. Click this checkbox to remove the checkmark and turn the feature Off. Once unchecked, click the blue OK button. You can now type a number and a period, or start a line with a dash, and Google Docs will leave it as plain text exactly as you typed it.
