The Unsolicited Edits
Google Docs features a powerful collaboration tool called “Suggesting Mode.” When this mode is active, any changes you make to the document are not finalized; instead, they appear as brightly colored, bracketed text with a line through the original words, essentially acting as tracked changes awaiting approval. While vital for editors reviewing someone else’s work, it is incredibly annoying if you are the primary author and Google Docs has accidentally switched you into this mode. Suddenly, every typo you fix or sentence you delete requires a secondary click to “accept” the change, effectively doubling your workload and cluttering the screen with green suggestion boxes.
Returning to Direct Editing
To write normally without generating tracked changes and stop Google Docs from automatically showing your keystrokes as suggestions, you simply need to switch your active editing mode.
Look at the top-right corner of the Google Docs interface, just below the blue “Share” button. You will see a button that indicates your current mode. If you are stuck in Suggesting mode, this button will likely have a green pencil icon and say Suggesting. Click this button to open a small drop-down menu. You will see three options: Editing, Suggesting, and Viewing. Click on Editing (it usually has a blue pencil icon next to it). The button will update to reflect the change. From this point forward, any text you type, delete, or format will be applied directly and permanently to the document without generating any suggestion prompts.
