How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Printing Headers and Footers

The Unwanted Marginal Text

When you print a Google Docs document or export it to PDF, the headers and footers you configured in the document are included on every printed page by default. This includes page numbers, document titles, dates, or custom text you placed in the header or footer areas. While essential for formal reports and academic papers, these elements are unwanted when printing a quick draft, a simple letter, or a creative piece where the header and footer add visual clutter to the printed output. Google Docs does not offer a one-click “print without headers/footers” option in its print dialogue, which forces users to manually delete headers and footers before printing and then re-add them afterward.

Removing Headers and Footers Before Printing

To stop Google Docs from automatically printing headers and footers on every page, you must either clear the header and footer content or adjust the margins to exclude them from the printed area.

The most direct approach is to temporarily remove the content. Double-click on the header area at the top of any page to enter header editing mode. Select all the text within the header (Ctrl + A while the cursor is inside the header) and delete it. Do the same for the footer by double-clicking the footer area at the bottom of any page. Print your document, then undo the deletions with Ctrl + Z multiple times to restore the original header and footer content. Alternatively, if you want to keep the headers visible on screen but exclude them from the PDF export, go to File > Page setup and set the Header and Footer margin values to 0. This collapses the header and footer zones, effectively removing them from the printable area. Note that this approach may shift your body text upward, so preview the document before finalising.
