The Print Layout Disruption
Google Docs defaults to a view called “Print Layout.” This mode is designed to show you exactly how the document will look if you were to print it on physical A4 or Letter-sized paper. Because of this, as you type and reach the bottom of the virtual page, Google Docs automatically inserts a hard visual page break. It displays a grey gap between the pages, breaks your paragraphs across this gap, and forces you to scroll past the margins. If you are writing content exclusively intended for digital consumption—like a blog post draft, a long coding script, or continuous meeting notes—these automatic page breaks unnecessarily disrupt the flow of your reading and writing experience.
Switching to Pageless Mode
To stop Google Docs from automatically inserting page breaks and forcing your text into strict physical dimensions, you must switch the document format from “Pages” to “Pageless.”
Open the Google Doc you are working on. Navigate to the top menu bar and click on File. Scroll down the drop-down menu and select Page setup. A dialog box will appear with two distinct tabs at the top. Click on the tab labeled Pageless. This mode removes all page boundaries, margins, and headers/footers, creating one continuous, infinite scrolling canvas that expands to fit whatever screen you are using. Click the OK button to apply the change. All existing page breaks will instantly disappear. If you want this continuous layout to be the default for all future documents you create, you can return to the Page setup menu, select Pageless, and click the “Set as default” button in the bottom-left corner before clicking OK.
