How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Inserting Header Rows

The Redundant Top Row

When working with tables in Google Docs, organizing data effectively is key. A common practice is to use the top row of a table as a header, containing titles for each column. Google Docs has a feature designed to help with this: if a table spans multiple pages, it can automatically insert that header row at the top of the table on every new page. While this is incredibly useful for maintaining context in long data sets, it can be annoying if you are using tables for page layout (like a resume or a custom form) where a repeating top row ruins the intended design and breaks the visual flow of the document.

Disabling the ‘Pin Header Row’ Feature

To keep your table structure exactly as you drew it and stop Google Docs from automatically inserting header rows on subsequent pages, you must adjust the table properties.

Click anywhere inside the top row of the table that is duplicating itself. Right-click inside that cell to open the context menu. Scroll down and select Table properties. A sidebar will open on the right side of your screen. In this sidebar, click to expand the Row section. Look for the checkbox labeled Pin header row(s). By default, if the table spans pages, this might be checked. Click the checkbox to uncheck it. The change will take effect immediately. The top row of your table will now only appear once, at the very beginning of the table, regardless of how many pages the table stretches across.
