The Distracting Red Lines
Google Docs features a pervasive, always-on spell checking engine. As you type, it constantly scans your words against its internal dictionary. When it detects a word it doesn’t recognize, it automatically underlines it with a jagged, bright red squiggly line. While this is helpful for catching genuine typos in standard prose, it becomes an intense visual distraction if you are writing technical documentation containing code snippets, drafting a fantasy novel with unique character names, or compiling a list of foreign-language terms. A document filled with red underlines can make it difficult to focus on the actual content and structure of your writing.
Disabling Visual Spell Check Formatting
To stop Google Docs from automatically highlighting unrecognized words with red squiggly underlines, you must disable the real-time spelling and grammar suggestion features within the editor tools.
Open the Google Docs document where you are experiencing the issue. Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Tools. Hover your mouse over the first option in the drop-down menu, which is Spelling and grammar. A secondary fly-out menu will appear to the right. Look for the option labeled Show spelling suggestions. By default, this will have a checkmark next to it. Click on Show spelling suggestions to uncheck it and disable the feature. (You may also want to uncheck Show grammar suggestions while you are there to remove the blue squiggly lines). As soon as you uncheck this option, Google Docs will instantly remove all the red underlines from your entire document. The system will stop actively scanning your text in the background, allowing you to write complex, non-standard terminology without visual interruption.
