The Formatting Hijack
Google Docs is designed to anticipate your formatting needs. One of its most aggressive autocorrect features involves list generation. If you type the number “1”, followed by a period (“.”), and then hit the spacebar, Google Docs assumes you are starting a formal list. It immediately hijacks your text, pushes it to the right with an indent, and automatically generates a “2.” when you hit Enter. This is incredibly frustrating if you are simply typing a date (e.g., “1. 2. 2024”), outlining a specific legal clause, or entering data where the literal text “1.” is required without any associated formatting logic.
Disabling Automatic List Detection
To type numbers normally without triggering formatting rules and stop Google Docs from automatically creating numbered lists, you must disable the list detection feature within the autocorrect preferences.
Open your Google Docs document. Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Tools. From the drop-down menu, select Preferences. A dialogue box will appear in the center of your screen. Ensure you are looking at the General tab (it should open to this by default). Look down the list of checkbox options for the one labelled Automatically detect lists. Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark, completely turning the feature off. Click the blue OK button at the bottom of the window to save your changes. From now on, you can type “1.” and press the spacebar, and Docs will leave your text exactly as you typed it, without indenting or formatting it into a list.
