The Segmented Document
When drafting long documents in Google Docs, you might notice that the text suddenly jumps to a new page, leaving a massive, unexplained block of white space at the bottom of the previous page. This is not a glitch; it is the result of automatic pagination rules. Google Docs attempts to keep certain elements together—like preventing a paragraph from being split in half across two pages, or ensuring a heading always stays with the paragraph immediately following it. While intended to make printed documents look professional, this automatic page-breaking behavior can disrupt the visual flow when editing online.
Adjusting Line and Paragraph Spacing Rules
To regain control over your document’s layout and stop Google Docs from automatically adding unexpected page breaks, you must adjust the “Keep with next” and “Keep lines together” formatting options.
Highlight the paragraph (or heading and paragraph combination) that is jumping to the next page prematurely. In the top menu bar, click on Format. Hover over Line & paragraph spacing to open the sub-menu. At the bottom of this list, you will see several options with checkmarks next to them. If Keep with next is checked, the selected paragraph refuses to be separated from the paragraph below it, pulling both to a new page if they don’t fit. If Keep lines together is checked, the paragraph itself refuses to be split across a page break. Click on these options to uncheck them. The text will instantly flow naturally, filling the empty space on the previous page before breaking exactly where the margin ends.
