The Checkout Interruption
Whenever you make a purchase online and manually type in your credit or debit card details, Google Chrome intercepts the checkout process. A small pop-up window appears near the address bar asking, “Save card?” Chrome wants to store your payment information (including the card number, expiration date, and name) securely in your Google Account. While this autofill feature is incredibly convenient for frequent shoppers, it can be highly annoying—or even a security risk—if you are using a shared computer, making a one-time purchase with a temporary virtual card, or simply prefer to keep your financial data strictly offline. If you frequently decline the prompt, the constant interruption becomes a nuisance.
How to Disable the Payment Saving Prompt
You can turn off this autofill feature entirely from within Chrome’s settings. Once disabled, Chrome will stop monitoring checkout forms and will never ask to save your payment methods again.
1. Open Google Chrome on your computer.
2. Click the three vertical dots (the “Customize and control Google Chrome” menu) located in the extreme top-right corner of the browser window.
3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
4. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Autofill and passwords.
5. In the main pane, click on Payment methods.
6. You will see a toggle switch labelled Save and fill payment methods.
7. Click the toggle to turn it Off (the switch will slide to the left and turn gray).
From now on, you can enter your credit card information on any website, and Chrome will remain completely silent, allowing you to complete your checkout without any intrusive pop-ups.
How to Delete Previously Saved Cards
Disabling the prompt stops Chrome from asking to save *new* cards, but it does not delete any payment methods it has already collected.
1. Stay on the same Payment methods settings page.
2. Look below the toggle switch to the section labelled “Saved payment methods.”
3. You will see a list of any credit cards currently stored in your browser.
4. To remove a card, click the three vertical dots next to the specific card’s expiration date.
5. Select Remove (or “Delete”) from the small menu.
Your local browser cache will be cleared of that financial data, ensuring that your card numbers cannot be automatically filled into a form by someone else using your computer.
