Google Chrome is notorious for consuming massive amounts of RAM (memory). If you have thirty tabs open and your computer suddenly slows to a crawl, the Windows Task Manager isn’t very helpful. The Task Manager simply shows “Google Chrome (30 processes) – 4.5 GB,” making it impossible to know which specific tab is causing the problem.
Is it the YouTube tab, the massive Google Sheets document, or a rogue advertising script running in the background of a news article? To find the exact culprit, you must bypass the Windows Task Manager entirely and extract the memory footprint data directly from Chrome’s internal rendering engine.
How to Safely Extract Chrome Memory Footprint Per Tab
You must use Google Chrome’s hidden, internal Task Manager to view per-tab RAM usage.
- Open the Google Chrome browser.
- Ensure you have all your typical tabs open and running.
- Look at the very top of the Chrome window, right next to the empty space beside your tabs (or next to the minimize/maximize buttons).
- Right-click in the empty space of the title bar and select Task Manager from the drop-down menu. (Alternatively, press Shift + Esc on your keyboard).
- A completely new, standalone window will appear. This is Chrome’s internal Task Manager.
- Click the Memory footprint column header at the top to sort the list from highest RAM usage to lowest.
You can now see a highly detailed breakdown. It will explicitly tell you that “Tab: YouTube” is using 800 MB, while “Extension: AdBlock” is using 150 MB. If you spot a specific tab consuming multiple gigabytes of memory and crippling your system, you can click on it in the list and click the blue End process button at the bottom right to instantly kill that specific webpage without closing the rest of your browser.
