Tab groups in Google Chrome are an excellent way to organise your browsing sessions. By grouping related tabs together and colour-coding them, you can keep your workspace clean. However, a common frustration occurs when you accidentally close an entire tab group, instantly losing several important web pages at once.
The Problem with Closed Tab Groups
When you close a single tab in Chrome, you can usually recover it simply by pressing Ctrl + Shift + T (or Cmd + Shift + T on a Mac). But when you right-click a tab group and accidentally select “Close group,” Chrome treats the entire group as a single entity. If you try to restore it, you might find that your tabs do not come back in their original, colour-coded group structure.
How to Restore a Closed Tab Group
Fortunately, Google Chrome has built-in features to help you recover lost tab groups perfectly intact.
Method 1: Use the Keyboard Shortcut
The fastest way to recover an accidentally closed tab group is using the standard “reopen closed tab” shortcut. Chrome’s memory is designed to remember groups.
- Immediately after accidentally closing the tab group, do not open any new tabs or close any other windows.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + T (on Windows/Linux) or Cmd + Shift + T (on Mac).
- The entire tab group will instantly reappear, complete with its original name and colour.
Method 2: Use the Chrome History Menu
If you have already opened other tabs or closed other windows since the accident, the keyboard shortcut will only open the most recently closed item. In this case, you must use the History menu.
- Click the three vertical dots (the Chrome menu) in the top-right corner of your browser.
- Hover your mouse over History.
- Look under the Recently Closed section.
- You should see an item that looks like a folder with a coloured dot, often labelled with the name of your tab group and the number of tabs it contained (e.g., “Research (5 tabs)”).
- Click on this item to restore the entire group perfectly.
How to Prevent Accidental Deletions in the Future
To stop yourself from accidentally losing important tab groups again, you should enable the “Save group” feature.
- Right-click on the coloured header of your tab group.
- Toggle the switch for Save group to the ON position.
- A small icon for your saved tab group will now permanently appear on your Bookmarks bar (just below the address bar).
If you ever close this group in the future, you can simply click its icon on the Bookmarks bar to instantly reopen all the tabs inside it.
