Modern professional inboxes receive hundreds of communications each week. Between meeting requests, customer inquiries, and vendor contracts, it is remarkably easy to open an important message, make a mental note to respond later, and subsequently lose track of it as new messages flood in. Conversely, you might send an urgent query to a colleague and forget to follow up when they fail to reply within several days.
To mitigate these communication breakdowns, Google integrated an intelligent reminder capability into Gmail called Nudges. Powered by machine learning algorithms, Nudges identifies messages that likely require action and automatically repositions them to the top of your inbox with clear contextual prompts. This guide explains how Nudges work, how to enable or turn them off in Gmail on desktop and mobile, and how to manage them to suit your email workflow.
Understanding How Gmail Nudges Function
Unlike manual snoozing—where you explicitly instruct Gmail to resurface an email at a specific day and time—Nudges operates automatically in the background. Google’s algorithms analyse thread timing, language patterns, and whether you or the recipient normally reply to similar communications.
Gmail categorises nudges into two distinct behavioural rules:
| Nudge Classification | Trigger Condition | Example Inbox Prompt | Operational Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suggest emails to reply to | Received messages that you may have forgotten to respond to after 3–5 days | “Received 3 days ago. Reply?” (highlighted in orange text) | Prevents customer queries or team requests from going unanswered |
| Suggest emails to follow up on | Sent messages where you asked a question or sent a proposal and received no answer | “Sent 4 days ago. Follow up?” (highlighted in green/orange text) | Reminds you to check in on unanswered invoices, bids, or tasks |
When an email is nudged, Gmail moves the conversation thread to the very top of your inbox view regardless of its original date, accompanied by a brightly coloured timestamp notification.
How to Enable or Turn Off Nudges in Gmail on Desktop
You can toggle either or both nudge categories directly from your Gmail web settings:
- Open your web browser and navigate to Gmail. Log in with your Google account.
- Click the Settings gear icon in the top-right corner of the window.
- In the Quick settings panel, click See all settings.
- Ensure you are on the General tab.
- Scroll down to the Nudges section. You will see two independent checkboxes:
- Suggest emails to reply to: Tick to enable reminders for incoming messages you haven’t answered, or untick to disable them.
- Suggest emails to follow up on: Tick to enable reminders for sent messages awaiting a response, or untick to turn them off.
- Scroll down to the very bottom of the page and click the Save Changes button.
Gmail reloads your inbox. If you disabled nudges, all existing automated reminder banners disappear immediately, and threads return to their standard chronological sorting.
Managing Nudges on the Gmail Mobile App (Android and iOS)
If you primarily process emails on your smartphone or tablet, you can adjust Nudge preferences within the mobile app settings. Unlike desktop web settings which apply account-wide, mobile client settings control push notifications and badge triggers locally:
On Android:
- Open the Gmail app on your Android device.
- Tap the Hamburger menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner.
- Scroll to the bottom of the drawer and tap Settings.
- Tap your specific email address.
- Under the General or Notifications section, tap Nudges (or Reply and follow up).
- Toggle Suggest emails to reply to and Suggest emails to follow up on on or off according to your preference.
On iPhone and iPad (iOS):
- Open the Gmail app on iOS.
- Tap the menu button (three lines) > Settings.
- Tap Email settings > select your account.
- Tap Nudges.
- Toggle the switches for reply suggestions and follow-up reminders.
Dismissing an Individual Nudge Without Opening the Email
Occasionally, Gmail might nudge an email that does not require a reply—such as an automated notification from a supplier or an informational newsletter that phrased a headline as a question. You do not have to compose an email just to clear the nudge:
- On Desktop: Hover your mouse cursor over the nudged conversation row in your inbox. Click the Dismiss button that appears directly beside the orange nudge text, or click the Snooze clock icon to reschedule it manually.
- On Mobile: Open the conversation thread. At the top of the message above the prompt, tap the small X icon on the nudge card to dismiss it permanently.
Configuring Gmail Nudges allows you to maintain inbox zero discipline whilst ensuring that high-priority communications and awaiting replies never slip through administrative cracks.
