If you spend hours a day browsing the web, Google Chrome’s bright white interface — the tab bar, address bar, bookmarks bar, and menus — can cause real eye strain, particularly in the evening or in dim environments. Chrome includes a native Dark Mode that switches these interface elements to soothing shades of dark grey and charcoal, reducing the overall light output from your screen and making extended browsing sessions significantly more comfortable.
Dark Mode vs System Theme: What Is the Difference?
Chrome offers two relevant options when you adjust its appearance:
- Dark: Forces Chrome’s interface to always display in dark mode, regardless of what your computer’s operating system is set to.
- Device (System Default): Chrome automatically mirrors your computer’s system-wide appearance. If your Mac or Windows PC is set to switch to Dark Mode at sunset, Chrome will follow automatically.
Choose “Dark” if you always want a dark browser. Choose “Device” if you prefer Chrome to match your system settings dynamically.
How to Enable Dark Mode on Desktop (Windows and Mac)
Google updated Chrome’s appearance settings and moved the theme control to an easily accessible panel.
- Open Google Chrome on your Windows or Mac computer.
- Open a New Tab page (press Ctrl+T on Windows, or Cmd+T on Mac).
- Look in the very bottom-right corner of the New Tab page and click the Customise Chrome button (the icon shows a small pencil/pen).
- A side panel will slide open on the right side of the screen. Look for the Appearance or Mode section.
- Click the circle labelled Dark.
- Chrome’s tabs, bookmarks bar, and menus will instantly transition to a dark colour scheme without requiring a browser restart.
How to Enable Dark Mode on Android
- Open the Chrome app on your Android smartphone or tablet.
- Tap the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner of the screen to open the menu.
- Tap Settings.
- Under the “Basics” section, tap on Theme.
- Select Dark to permanently lock Chrome in dark mode, or select System Default to let Chrome follow your Android’s system-wide dark mode setting.
How to Enable Dark Mode on iPhone and iPad
On iOS, Chrome’s dark mode behaviour is tied to your iPhone’s system settings and cannot be set independently within the app.
- Go to your iPhone or iPad’s Settings app.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Select Dark under the Appearance section.
Once your iPhone is in system-wide Dark Mode, Chrome for iOS will automatically display its interface in dark colours.
Dark Mode for Websites: What Chrome Cannot Do
It is important to understand a key limitation: enabling Dark Mode in Chrome only changes the browser interface itself (the tab bar, address bar, settings menus, and New Tab page). It does not automatically convert the content of websites to a dark background. If a website uses a white or light-coloured design, it will still appear white when you visit it.
If you want to force all websites to display in a dark theme, you need to install a third-party browser extension. The most popular and well-regarded option is Dark Reader, which is available for free in the Chrome Web Store. It intelligently inverts and darkens the colour schemes of web pages while preserving image colours and readability.
