How to Use Search Chips in Google Drive to Filter Files Fast

As your Google Drive fills with thousands of shared documents, spreadsheets, slide presentations, and meeting recordings, searching by simple keywords often returns hundreds of overwhelming results. Rather than manually typing complex boolean search operators (like type:spreadsheet owner:me modified:today), Google Drive includes interactive visual Search Chips directly beneath the search bar. These one-click dropdown filters allow you to narrow down vast libraries in seconds.

Understanding Search Chip Categories

Google Drive provides six essential filtering chips that can be combined for precision searching:

  • Type: Restricts results to specific file formats (Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Forms, Photos & Images, PDFs, Videos, or Folders).
  • People: Filters by the person who created, owns, or shared the document with you.
  • Modified: Pinpoints files edited today, in the past 7 days, past 30 days, or during custom date ranges.
  • Source / Location: Limits searches to your personal “My Drive”, “Shared with me”, or specific “Shared drives”.
  • Title Only: Ensures the search keyword matches the actual file title rather than indexing body text inside the document.
  • To Do: Filters documents that contain pending action items assigned to you or waiting for your approval.

How to Filter Files Using Search Chips

Filtering your cloud storage takes a couple of clicks:

  1. Open Google Drive in your web browser.
  2. Click into the top search bar, or type an initial keyword (such as “Budget”) and press Enter.
  3. Immediately beneath the search box, a horizontal row of rounded grey search chips will appear.
  4. Click on the Type chip and select Spreadsheets. Drive instantly removes all PDFs, Docs, and slides.
  5. Click on the Modified chip and select Past 30 days.
  6. Click on the People chip and type a coworker’s name to isolate only sheets created by that colleague.
  7. Google Drive updates your file list dynamically as you click, isolating the exact document you need.

Clearing and Resetting Search Chips

To remove filters and return to your general drive view:

  • Click the small X on any individual chip to remove only that specific constraint.
  • Click Clear filters on the far right of the chip bar to reset all criteria at once.

Using Search Chips on Mobile Devices

The Google Drive app for Android, iPhone, and iPad supports interactive search chips:

  1. Tap the Search in Drive bar at the top of the mobile app.
  2. Horizontally swipe through the rounded filter pills directly below the search box.
  3. Tap Type, Modified, or Shared to filter your mobile view on the go.
