How to Configure Client-Side Encryption and Data Loss Prevention in Google Drive

Cloud collaboration platforms store critical business intelligence, customer personal data, and proprietary intellectual property. While Google Workspace automatically encrypts files in transit and at rest using Google-managed keys, regulated industries (such as healthcare, defense, and finance) require zero-knowledge cryptographic separation. With Client-Side Encryption (CSE) and Data Loss Prevention (DLP), organizations retain complete sovereign ownership over encryption keys and enforce automated policies preventing confidential file leakage.

Understanding Client-Side Encryption (CSE) Architecture

In standard cloud encryption, the cloud provider holds the cryptographic keys to decrypt files when executing server-side tasks. With Google Workspace Client-Side Encryption:

  • Files are encrypted in the user’s web browser or endpoint client before being uploaded to Google Drive.
  • Encryption keys are managed by an external third-party Key Management Service (KMS) or an on-premises cryptographic hardware security module (HSM).
  • Google servers receive only the ciphertext payload. Google cannot inspect, index, or decrypt the underlying documents, ensuring protection even against subpoenas or rogue provider access.

Configuring an External Key Access Service (KACLS)

Before enabling CSE in Google Workspace Admin Console, enterprise administrators must connect an authorized identity and key access service (such as Thales, Fortanix, Virtru, or custom key management endpoints):

  1. Sign into the Google Workspace Admin Console (admin.google.com).
  2. Navigate to Security > Access and data control > Client-side encryption.
  3. Under External Key Service, click Add Key Service.
  4. Enter your Key Access Control List Service (KACLS) URL, IdP authentication URL, and organizational identity credentials.
  5. Save the connection and verify that the endpoint health check returns successful status codes.

Enabling Client-Side Encryption for Organizational Units

Once key infrastructure is validated, grant CSE privileges to specific organizational groups:

  1. In Security > Client-side encryption, select your target Organizational Unit (OU) in the left hierarchy.
  2. Set the CSE permission state to On.
  3. Users within that unit now receive an option to create or upload encrypted files in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive.
  4. In Google Docs, clicking File > Make a copy or creating a new document allows users to toggle Add client-side encryption, indicated by a prominent padlock badge next to the document title.

Configuring Data Loss Prevention (DLP) Rules in Google Drive

To complement client-side encryption, configure automated Data Loss Prevention rules to scan Drive files for sensitive identifiers (such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, or internal project code words):

  1. In the Admin Console, navigate to Security > Access and data control > Data protection.
  2. Click Manage Rules, then select Add Rule.
  3. Define the scope by selecting target Organizational Units.
  4. In the Trigger section, choose File created, uploaded, or modified in Google Drive.
  5. Under Conditions, select predefined data detectors (e.g., Credit Card Number, US Social Security Number) or create a regular expression for internal project tags.
  6. Under Actions, choose appropriate enforcement:
    • Block external sharing: Prevents users from sharing matched files outside the organization domain.
    • Warn users on external share: Displays a mandatory confirmation dialog before sharing.
    • Alert administrator: Dispatches automated security alert notifications to the Security Investigation Tool.
  7. Click Save and Activate to begin real-time content policy enforcement across Drive.
