Finding a specific picture from five years ago can be a nightmare if you are just scrolling manually. Fortunately, Google Photos has an incredibly powerful AI-driven search engine built right in. It analyzes your photos to automatically identify people, pets, locations, and even abstract concepts.
How to Search for People and Pets
Google Photos uses facial recognition to group pictures of the same individual together.
- Open the Google Photos app and tap the Search tab at the bottom of the screen.
- At the top of the search page, you will see a row of faces under the “People & Pets” section.
- Tap a face to see every photo of that specific person.
- Pro Tip: Label them! When viewing a person’s photo group, tap Add a name at the top of the screen. Type in their name (e.g., “Mom”). From now on, you can simply type “Mom” directly into the main search bar to find her photos.
(If you do not see the faces section, go to the app Settings > Preferences > Group similar faces and ensure the feature is turned on).
How to Search by Location (Places)
Because smartphones attach GPS data to the pictures you take, you can easily search for vacation memories.
- Use the Search Bar: Type the name of a city, country, or specific landmark (e.g., “Paris,” “Disneyland,” or “Beach”) into the search bar.
- Use the Interactive Map: In the Search tab, scroll down to the Places section and tap Your Map. This opens a visual heatmap showing where all your photos were taken. You can pinch to zoom in on specific cities or neighborhoods to see the photos taken there.
How to Search for Things and Text
Google’s AI automatically categorizes objects and scenery without you having to tag anything.
- Search for Objects: Try typing general concepts into the search bar like “dog,” “cars,” “sunset,” “cake,” “wedding,” or “hiking.” Google will scan the visual elements of your photos and pull up relevant matches.
- Search for Text: This is incredibly useful for finding screenshots or photos of documents. You can search for words that appear inside the picture. For example, search for “Receipt,” “Menu,” or the name of a specific restaurant printed on a sign in the background.
- Combine Keywords: To get really specific, combine search terms. You can search for “Mom in Paris” or “Dog at the beach” to narrow down your results.
