How to Use the Equations Tool in Google Docs to Format Math Formulas

The Challenge of Typing Math

If you are a student writing a physics lab report, or a teacher drafting an algebra quiz, standard word processing software is a nightmare. Typing basic text is easy, but typing complex mathematical formulas—like fractions stacked on top of each other, square root symbols, or Greek letters like Pi and Sigma—is nearly impossible using a standard keyboard.

Many people resort to formatting hacks, like using the slash key for fractions (1/2) or spelling out the Greek words (“delta X”). This looks highly unprofessional in an academic paper and can easily confuse the reader.

To solve this, Google Docs includes a dedicated, built-in Equations Tool. This feature allows you to beautifully format complex mathematical formulas directly into your paragraphs using standard academic typography.

Step 1: Enabling the Equations Toolbar

Because the average user does not need to type calculus formulas, the Equations tool is hidden by default. You must enable its dedicated toolbar before you can begin.

  1. Open your Google Doc.
  2. In the top menu bar, click View.
  3. Select Show equation toolbar from the drop-down menu.

A new, thin gray toolbar will appear directly underneath your standard formatting tools. It features a button labeled New equation, along with several drop-down menus containing hundreds of mathematical symbols.

Step 2: Inserting a Basic Formula

Let’s write a standard fraction: “x over y”.

  1. Place your blinking cursor exactly where you want the formula to appear in your text.
  2. Click the New equation button on the gray toolbar. A small blue box will appear in your document.
  3. Look at the drop-down menus on the toolbar. Click the menu labeled Math operations (it has a symbol that looks like a square root and a fraction).
  4. Select the a/b fraction icon.

The blue box will instantly split into a top half and a bottom half, separated by a horizontal line. Type the letter “x”, press the down arrow on your keyboard to jump to the bottom half, and type the letter “y”. Press the right arrow to exit the fraction.

You have just created a perfectly formatted, vertically stacked fraction that will scale smoothly if you change the font size.

Step 3: Using LaTeX Keyboard Shortcuts

While clicking through drop-down menus is fine for a single fraction, it is incredibly tedious if you are typing a massive page of calculus equations.

To speed up your workflow, the Google Docs Equations Tool fully supports standard LaTeX keyboard shortcuts. LaTeX is the standard typesetting language used by professional mathematicians.

Instead of clicking menus, you can simply type a backslash (\) followed by the name of the symbol you want.

  • To instantly type the Greek letter Alpha: Click New equation, type \alpha, and press the Spacebar.
  • To instantly type a square root: Type \sqrt and press the Spacebar.
  • To instantly type a fraction: Type \frac and press the Spacebar.

Step 4: Using Superscripts and Subscripts

If you need to type an exponent (like E=mc²) or a chemical formula (like H₂O), you do not need to use the drop-down menus.

Once you are inside the blue New equation box:

  • To create a superscript (exponent), use the Shift + 6 (caret ^) key. Type x^2 and press Space to get x².
  • To create a subscript, use the Shift + Dash (underscore _) key. Type H_2 and press Space to drop the 2 to the bottom.

By mastering these basic keyboard shortcuts, you can type flawlessly formatted academic papers in Google Docs just as fast as you type standard English sentences.
