Almost every news site, blog, and online store will immediately display a pop-up asking, “Allow this site to send notifications?” Most users click “Allow” by mistake and suddenly find their desktop bombarded with annoying pop-ups, sales alerts, and breaking news banners. Here is how to stop notifications entirely in Google Chrome.
How to Turn Off All Notifications (Recommended)
The best way to stop the annoyance is to disable notifications globally. This stops websites from ever asking you in the first place.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top-right corner of the browser window.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- Click on Privacy and security in the left-hand sidebar.
- Click on Site settings.
- Scroll down to the “Permissions” section and click on Notifications.
- Under the “Default behavior” heading, click the circle next to Don’t allow sites to send notifications.
Pro Tip: If you want to stop the annoying pop-up requests but still want a small indicator that a site wants to send notifications, you can select “Use quieter messaging” instead.
How to Block or Remove Specific Websites
If you have already accidentally allowed a few websites to spam you with alerts, turning off future requests won’t stop the ones you already approved. You have to remove them manually.
- Follow steps 1-6 above to get to the Notifications settings page.
- Scroll down to the very bottom of the page to the Allowed to send notifications section.
- Look through the list of URLs. When you find the website that has been spamming you, click the three dots next to its URL.
- Select Remove (which deletes its permission, forcing it to ask again) or Block (which permanently bans it from sending notifications).
