How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Generating Table of Contents

The Outline Auto-Generation

Google Docs is designed to help you organize large documents efficiently. One of its most helpful structural tools is the Table of Contents feature, which reads the heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) applied throughout your document and automatically generates a clickable, formatted index at the beginning of the file. In some organizational contexts, or when using specific templates, Docs might proactively attempt to generate or update this table based on your typing habits.

While automatic structuring is fantastic for standard corporate reports, it can be highly frustrating if you are using heading styles purely for visual formatting rather than structural organization. For example, if you are writing a script, a flyer, or a highly stylized marketing document where you use “Heading 1” simply because you want the text to be large and bold, you do not want Google Docs treating those visual choices as chapters in a book and automatically generating a Table of Contents. If you prefer to manage your document’s index manually, or if you don’t want a Table of Contents at all, you need to understand how to prevent its automatic creation.

How to Stop Automatic Table of Contents Generation

Unlike simple text substitutions, preventing a Table of Contents involves managing how you format your document.

  1. Do Not Use Heading Styles for Visual Formatting: Google Docs generates the Table of Contents strictly by reading the “Heading 1,” “Heading 2,” and “Title” styles. If you do not want a Table of Contents, stop applying these styles.
  2. Instead of using the Styles dropdown menu, format your text manually: Highlight the text, click the Bold button, and manually increase the Font Size to 18 or 24. Manual formatting is ignored by the Table of Contents engine.
  3. Do Not Insert the Element: Google Docs will not force a Table of Contents into a blank document unless you ask it to. Ensure you never click Insert > Table of Contents.
  4. If using a Template: Many default templates include a pre-generated Table of Contents. If it keeps updating itself, you must physically delete the element. Click on the Table of Contents block in the document, click the three vertical dots that appear in its top-left corner, and select Remove table of contents.

By relying on manual font sizing rather than semantic heading styles, you ensure Google Docs never attempts to automatically structure or index your document.
