The Distracting Sidebar
Google Docs includes a feature designed to help you navigate long, complex documents. On the left side of the screen, there is an “Outline” panel. As you type, Google Docs constantly analyzes your text. Whenever you format a line of text as a Heading (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.), or even if you simply make a short line of text bold, Google’s AI automatically assumes it is a section title and adds it to the Outline sidebar as a clickable link.
While this is useful for a 50-page thesis, it is highly distracting if you are writing a creative script, a short letter, or a document with non-standard formatting. Having the sidebar constantly jump around and auto-generate links based on bold text you never intended to be headings is annoying. You can turn this panel off.
How to Hide the Automatic Document Outline
You can remove the Outline panel directly from the View menu.
- Open your web browser and navigate to any open document in Google Docs.
- At the top of the screen, click on the View menu.
- Look down the dropdown list for the option labelled Show outline. It will likely have a small checkmark next to it.
- Click on “Show outline” to remove the checkmark.
The entire left-hand sidebar will immediately collapse and vanish, giving you back a clean, full-width page for writing. Google Docs will still technically keep track of your headings in the background, but the aggressive visual generation and the distracting sidebar will be completely hidden from your view.
