The Phantom Outlines
Google Docs features an automatic outline generator that monitors your text formatting. If it detects that you have bolded a short, standalone line of text—assuming you are trying to create a section heading without formally using the H1 or H2 styles—Docs will quietly extract that bolded text and add it to the interactive “Document Outline” sidebar on the left side of the screen.
While this “smart” detection is useful for quickly creating a navigable table of contents in a messy draft, it frequently misfires. If you are writing a script where character names are bolded, or a technical manual where you bold specific command-line arguments on their own line, your Document Outline will suddenly become filled with useless, disjointed words. Having Docs assume every bold phrase is a structural heading creates a cluttered, confusing navigation pane. If you prefer to manually control what appears in your outline using strict heading styles, you should disable this auto-generation.
How to Stop Automatic Outline Headers
You must turn off the automatic heading detection within the Preferences menu.
- Open a document in Google Docs.
- Look at the top toolbar and click on Tools.
- Select Preferences from the dropdown menu.
- In the Preferences window, ensure you are on the General tab.
- Look down the list of checkboxes for the option labelled Automatically add headings to outline.
- Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
- Click the blue OK button to save your changes.
From now on, Google Docs will stop interpreting your bolded text. The only items that will appear in your Document Outline sidebar will be text that you have explicitly formatted using the official “Heading 1,” “Heading 2,” etc., styles from the formatting toolbar.
