How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Correcting Spelling (Autocorrect)

The Autocorrect Dilemma

By default, Google Docs acts much like a smartphone keyboard. If you type a word that it believes is misspelled, it doesn’t just underline it in red—it actively intercepts your keystrokes and automatically changes the word to what it assumes you meant to type the moment you press the spacebar.

While this is helpful for casual typing, it is incredibly frustrating for technical writing. If you are typing out programming variables, medical terminology, fantasy character names, or obscure company acronyms, Google Docs will aggressively and incorrectly “fix” them. You are forced to constantly hit the backspace key to undo its corrections. To take back full control of your typing, you need to disable the autocorrect engine.

How to Stop Automatic Spelling Corrections

You can completely disable the autocorrect feature within the Google Docs Preferences menu.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to any open document in Google Docs.
  2. At the top of the screen, click on the Tools menu.
  3. Scroll down the dropdown list and click on Preferences.
  4. A popup window will appear. Ensure you are on the General tab.
  5. Look down the list of checkboxes for the option labelled Automatically correct spelling.
  6. Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
  7. Click the blue OK button at the bottom of the window to save your changes.

From now on, Google Docs will respect exactly what you type. If you misspell a word, or type a bizarre technical acronym, it will still underline it with a red squiggle to alert you, but it will never forcefully change the characters without your explicit permission.
