How to Insert and Customise Page Numbers in Google Docs

Whether preparing a formal academic essay, a multi-chapter eBook, or a business proposal in Google Docs, adding page numbers is essential for professional document presentation and navigation. However, standard formatting guidelines often require specific adjustments—such as omitting page numbers from title cover pages, starting the count on page two, or showing total page counts (e.g., “Page 3 of 15”). Google Docs provides flexible numbering presets and section formatting options to customize page numbering to your exact requirements.

Understanding Page Number Placement Presets

Google Docs offers four standard one-click numbering presets:

  • Top Right (All Pages): Places numbers in the top-right header on every page, starting from page 1.
  • Top Right (Skip First Page): Leaves the title or cover page unnumbered and begins numbering with “2” on the second page.
  • Bottom Right (All Pages): Places numbers in the bottom-right footer on every page.
  • Bottom Right (Skip First Page): The most common layout for formal reports; leaves the cover blank and numbers subsequent pages in the footer.

How to Insert Page Numbers in Google Docs

Adding numbers to your document takes two clicks:

  1. Open your document in Google Docs.
  2. Click on the Insert menu in the top toolbar.
  3. Hover over Page numbers.
  4. Select your preferred preset thumbnail layout (Header vs. Footer, with or without cover page omission).
  5. Page numbers will appear immediately in your designated margin area.

How to Start Numbering as Page 1 on the Second Page

If your style guide dictates that the cover page is unnumbered and the second page begins explicitly as “Page 1”:

  1. Click Insert > Page numbers > More options.
  2. Under Position, select Header or Footer.
  3. Uncheck the box labelled Show on first page.
  4. Under Numbering, look at the Start at field and change the value to 0 (or 1 depending on whether the cover counts towards pagination).
  5. Click Apply. Your cover will remain clean, and the second physical page will display “1”.

How to Display Total Page Counts (“Page X of Y”)

To let readers know the total length of your document:

  1. Double-click inside the header or footer area next to your active page number.
  2. Type the word of (with spaces) right after the existing page number.
  3. Click on the Insert menu and select Page count.
  4. Google Docs will automatically insert a dynamic total page counter that updates continuously as your document grows.
