How to Type the Degree Symbol in Google Docs Using a Keyboard Shortcut

Whether you are typing out a recipe that requires baking at 350°, or writing a geography report about coordinates at 45° North, finding the degree symbol can be frustrating. Because the degree symbol (°) is not printed on standard English keyboards, many users resort to copying and pasting it from a Google search. However, Google Docs allows you to type it instantly using a few different methods.

Method 1: The Keyboard Shortcut (Fastest)

If you are using a Mac or a Windows PC, your operating system has a built-in keyboard shortcut that allows you to type the degree symbol directly into Google Docs (or any other application) instantly.

  • On a Windows PC: Press and hold the Alt key, then type 0176 on your numeric keypad. Release the Alt key, and the symbol will appear. (Note: You must use the numeric keypad on the right side of your keyboard; the numbers across the top will not work).
  • On a Mac: Press and hold Option + Shift + 8 simultaneously.

Method 2: Google Docs Special Characters Menu

If you are using a laptop without a numeric keypad (like a Chromebook) and cannot use the Windows Alt code, you can use the built-in character menu inside Google Docs.

  1. Place your cursor where you want the degree symbol to appear.
  2. Click on Insert in the top menu bar.
  3. Select Special characters from the dropdown menu.
  4. A box will appear. In the “Search by keyword” bar on the right side, type the word degree.
  5. The degree symbol will appear in the left-hand grid. Click on it once to insert it into your document.

Method 3: Create an Automatic Substitution

If you type the degree symbol frequently, you can tell Google Docs to automatically convert a specific text string (like typing (deg)) into the symbol.

  1. Click Tools in the top menu bar, then select Preferences.
  2. Click on the Substitutions tab.
  3. In the “Replace” box, type the trigger you want to use (e.g., (deg)).
  4. In the “With” box, paste the actual degree symbol (°).
  5. Click OK. Now, every time you type (deg) and press the spacebar, Google Docs will automatically convert it into the proper symbol.
