How to Turn Off Auto-Capitalisation in Google Docs

Google Docs is designed to be helpful, automatically correcting common typos as you write. One of its most aggressive features is Auto-Capitalisation, which forcefully capitalizes the first letter of every new sentence. While this is great for standard essay writing, it can be extremely frustrating if you are typing code snippets, specific brand names (like iPhone or macOS), or poetry where lowercase letters are intentional. Fortunately, you can disable this feature entirely.

How to Disable Auto-Capitalisation

You can turn off this behaviour in the document preferences menu.

1. Open your document in Google Docs on a desktop web browser.
2. In the top toolbar, click on Tools.
3. From the dropdown menu, select Preferences (usually located near the bottom of the list).
4. A new popup window will appear on your screen. Ensure you are on the General tab.
5. Look for the checkbox labelled Automatically capitalize words.
6. Click the checkbox to uncheck it.
7. Click the blue OK button in the bottom right corner to save your changes.

Google Docs will instantly stop forcing your lowercase letters into uppercase at the start of sentences. This change is tied to your Google account preferences, meaning auto-capitalisation will remain disabled across all of your new and existing Google Docs until you manually turn the feature back on.
