Nothing ruins the professional formatting of a document quite like an “orphaned” heading. This occurs when a section title or heading sits alone at the very bottom of a page, while the paragraph it introduces is pushed onto the next page. Instead of repeatedly pressing the Enter key to force the heading down—which ruins your layout as soon as you add more text above it—you can use the “Keep with next” formatting option in Google Docs.
Why Use Keep With Next?
Using manual line breaks or page breaks to fix spacing issues is a temporary and fragile solution. If you edit the document later, those manual breaks will shift, creating awkward empty spaces in the middle of your pages. The “Keep with next” feature tells Google Docs to bind a specific paragraph or heading to the text immediately following it. If the following text moves to the next page, the heading automatically travels with it.
Step 1: Select the Orphaned Heading
You can apply this setting to any text, but it is most commonly used for headings (H1, H2, H3).
- Scroll through your Google Doc and locate the heading that is separated from its paragraph by a page break.
- Click anywhere inside the text of the heading to place your blinking cursor there. You do not need to highlight the entire sentence.
Step 2: Apply the Keep With Next Formatting
The setting is located within the line spacing options.
- Look at the main toolbar at the top of the Google Docs interface.
- Click on the Line & paragraph spacing icon (it looks like three horizontal lines with an up and down arrow next to them).
- At the bottom of the drop-down menu, click on Keep with next.
- A checkmark will appear next to the option to indicate it is active.
Step 3: Update Your Default Heading Styles (Optional but Recommended)
If you want to ensure that your headings never get orphaned in the future, you can update your default document styles to apply this rule automatically.
- Apply the “Keep with next” rule to an existing heading using the steps above.
- Highlight that heading text.
- Click the Format menu, hover over Paragraph styles, and select the heading level you are using (e.g., Heading 2).
- Click Update ‘Heading 2’ to match.
From now on, every time you apply that heading style in your document, Google Docs will automatically ensure it stays securely glued to the paragraph directly below it, maintaining a flawless page layout regardless of future edits.
