How to Use the Google Docs Preferences Menu to Manage Smart Quotes

When typing in Google Docs, you may notice that standard straight quotation marks (\" and ') automatically convert into curly, slanted \”Smart Quotes.\” While Smart Quotes look professional in novels, essays, and standard prose, they can cause catastrophic errors if you are drafting programming code, writing JSON payloads, or preparing command-line snippets. Copying curly quotes directly into a terminal or code editor will almost always result in syntax errors. To prevent this formatting issue, you can manage and disable Smart Quotes using the Google Docs Preferences menu.

Why Does Google Docs Use Smart Quotes?

Typographically, straight quotes were invented for typewriters to save space on the keyboard. Professional typesetting has always used curved, directional quotation marks (opening and closing quotes) to improve readability and aesthetics. Google Docs assumes you are writing standard text and automatically applies this typographical correction as you type. However, compilers, interpreters, and command-line interfaces do not recognize curly quotes as valid string delimiters, making it essential to turn off the \”smart\” feature when writing technical documentation.

Step 1: Open the Preferences Menu

The setting to control quotation marks is located within the global document preferences, not the formatting toolbar.

  1. Open your Google Docs document.
  2. Click on Tools in the top menu bar.
  3. At the bottom of the dropdown list, select Preferences.
  4. A dialog box will appear in the center of your screen.

Step 2: Disable Smart Quotes

The Preferences dialog contains several tabs; you need the general settings.

  1. Ensure you are on the General tab within the Preferences dialog box.
  2. Look for the checkbox labeled Use smart quotes.
  3. Uncheck this box to disable the automatic conversion.
  4. Click the blue OK button at the bottom to save your changes.

From this point forward, any new quotation marks or apostrophes you type will remain exactly as you struck them on the keyboard—straight, unformatted, and perfectly safe for copying into a coding environment.

Step 3: Fix Existing Smart Quotes

Disabling the preference only affects new text. If you have already typed curly quotes in your document, they will remain curly. You must replace them manually using the Find and Replace tool.

  1. Press Ctrl + H (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + H (Mac) to open the Find and Replace tool.
  2. In the \”Find\” field, type a single straight quote mark (\").
  3. In the \”Replace with\” field, type another single straight quote mark (\").
  4. Click Replace all.

Because you have disabled the smart quotes preference, Google Docs will strip out all the existing curly quotes and replace them with the raw, straight characters you just inputted, instantly sanitizing your document for technical use.

By understanding how to toggle Smart Quotes via the Preferences menu, technical writers and developers can ensure their Google Docs documentation remains cleanly formatted and free of invisible syntax errors.
