How to Use the Google Docs Line Spacing Tool to Format Academic Papers

Whether you are drafting a university thesis in APA format, formatting a legal contract, or preparing a manuscript for publishing, strict adherence to typographical spacing rules is mandatory. By default, Google Docs uses a compact line spacing of 1.15 to maximize the amount of text visible on screen. However, academic and legal institutions almost universally require \”Double Spacing\” to ensure readability and leave room for physical annotations. To mathematically adjust the vertical distance between lines of text, writers must utilize the Google Docs \”Line & Paragraph Spacing\” tool.

Why Use the Line Spacing Tool?

Attempting to create double-spaced text by manually pressing the \”Enter\” key at the end of every single line is a catastrophic formatting error.
