The Red Underline Distraction
Google Docs is equipped with an always-on spellchecking engine that actively scans your text as you type. Whenever it detects a word not found in its internal dictionary, it immediately flags it with a jagged red underline. While this is an essential tool for catching typos in standard writing, it becomes a severe visual distraction if you are drafting a document filled with specialized jargon, unique brand names, fictional character names, or code snippets. Having half of your document plastered in red underlines makes it difficult to read and completely ruins the aesthetic of your workspace.
Disabling the Live Checker
To clean up your screen and stop Google Docs from automatically spellchecking your text with red underlines, you must turn off the spelling suggestion feature.
Open the Google Docs document you are currently editing. Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Tools. In the drop-down menu, hover your cursor over Spelling and grammar to open the secondary menu. Look at the option labelled Show spelling suggestions. By default, there should be a checkmark next to it, indicating the feature is active. Click on Show spelling suggestions once to uncheck it. The moment you do this, all the red underlines across your entire document will instantly disappear. (Note: You can follow the exact same process to uncheck “Show grammar suggestions” if you also want to remove the blue grammar underlines).
