How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Changing the View Mode

The Missing Margins

Google Docs recently introduced a feature called “Pageless format.” Unlike the traditional “Pages” view—which mimics a physical sheet of paper with strict top, bottom, and side margins—Pageless mode creates a continuous, infinite canvas that expands to fit whatever screen you are viewing it on. While excellent for inserting very wide tables or large images, it fundamentally breaks standard document formatting. If you receive a document that was created in Pageless mode, or if Docs automatically switches your view to Pageless because it detected wide content, you lose the ability to see where page breaks will occur when printing.

Restoring the Page Layout

To ensure your document looks exactly as it will print and stop Google Docs from automatically changing your view mode to the infinite Pageless canvas, you must force the standard Page setup.

Open the Google Docs document that is currently displaying incorrectly. Navigate to the top menu bar and click on File. Scroll down the drop-down menu and select Page setup. A new dialogue box will appear on your screen, featuring two tabs at the very top: “Pages” and “Pageless.” Click on the Pages tab. You will see the standard options for orientation (Portrait/Landscape), paper size, and margins. Ensure your desired settings are selected here, and then click the blue OK button at the bottom right. The document will instantly snap back into the traditional view, restoring your margins, headers, footers, and visible page breaks.
