Google Chrome relies on a powerful cloud-based Sync Engine to keep your bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history synchronized across your laptop, phone, and tablet. When working perfectly, it feels like magic. However, if the local database on one of your devices becomes corrupted, that corruption is instantly uploaded to Google’s servers. Suddenly, every time you open Chrome on your phone, deleted bookmarks magically reappear, new passwords refuse to save, and the browser feels sluggish.
Simply signing out and signing back into your Google account will not fix this, because the corrupted data is permanently stored on Google’s cloud servers. As soon as you log back in, Chrome will download the corrupted data again. You must manually force Google’s servers to wipe the sync cache and completely reset the engine.
How to Completely Reset the Chrome Sync Engine
You must use Chrome’s built-in web dashboard to trigger a remote wipe of your cloud data.
- Open the Google Chrome browser on a computer (do not use a mobile phone for this).
- Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Under the “You and Google” section, click on Sync and Google services.
- Click on Review your synced data.
- This will open a special Google Dashboard webpage showing exactly how many bookmarks, passwords, and open tabs are currently saved on Google’s servers.
- Scroll to the absolute bottom of this page and click the button labeled Clear Data.
- A warning pop-up will appear. Confirm that you want to wipe the data.
What happens now? Google will instantly delete all of your Chrome data from their cloud servers. This will automatically sign you out of Chrome on all your devices. Crucially, this does not delete the local data currently sitting on your computer.
To rebuild the sync engine cleanly, simply sign back into Chrome on your computer. Chrome will take the healthy, local bookmarks and passwords currently on your PC and upload them to the freshly wiped cloud server, restoring perfect synchronization across all your devices.
