If you prefer to navigate the web in your native tongue, or if you accidentally clicked a button that changed your browser to a language you cannot read, Google Chrome makes it relatively easy to change its default display language. This changes the text of all menus, toolbars, and settings inside the browser.
How to Change the Language on Windows and Mac
- Open Google Chrome on your computer.
- Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the window.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- On the left-hand sidebar, click on Languages.
- Under the “Preferred languages” section, look for your desired language. If it is not there, click the blue Add languages button, search for it, and click Add.
- Once your language is on the list, click the three dots next to it.
- Check the box that says Display Google Chrome in this language.
- A Relaunch button will appear next to the language. Click it to restart the browser and apply the new language.
Pro Tip: If you are trying to change the language back to English but cannot read the current menus, remember the visual cues: Settings is always the third option from the bottom of the main menu, and Languages is always indicated by an icon of a globe on the sidebar.
How to Change the Language on Android
- Open the Chrome app on your phone.
- Tap the three dots in the top right corner and tap Settings (the gear icon).
- Scroll down and tap Languages.
- Under the “Chrome’s language” heading, tap the current language listed.
- Select your new language from the list. The browser will download the language pack, and you will need to restart the app for the changes to take effect.
