How to Disable Targeted Ads in Your Google Account Settings

By default, Google uses your search history, YouTube watch history, and activity across partner websites to serve you personalized, targeted advertisements. While some users prefer seeing ads relevant to their interests, many find the tracking intrusive. Fortunately, Google provides a central dashboard that allows you to easily disable personalized advertising across your entire Google Account.

What Happens When You Disable Targeted Ads?

It is important to understand that disabling personalized ads will not stop you from seeing advertisements on Google Search, YouTube, or third-party websites. Google is an advertising company, and ads will still appear.

However, the ads you see will no longer be based on your personal profile. Instead of seeing an ad for a pair of shoes you searched for yesterday, you will see generic ads based on broad factors like your general location, the time of day, or the specific topic of the website you are currently viewing.

How to Access the Google Ad Center

You can manage your advertising preferences from any web browser on your computer or mobile device.

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to myaccount.google.com.
  2. Ensure you are logged into the Google Account you wish to modify.
  3. In the left-hand navigation menu (or the top menu bar on mobile), click on Data & privacy.
  4. Scroll down the page until you find the section titled Personalized ads.
  5. Click on My Ad Center.

How to Turn Off Personalized Ads Completely

Once you are inside the My Ad Center dashboard, disabling the tracking is very straightforward.

  1. Look at the top-right corner of the My Ad Center screen. You will see a large button labeled Personalized ads with a status of “On.”
  2. Click this button.
  3. A confirmation window will pop up at the bottom of the screen, explaining what will happen when you turn the feature off.
  4. Click the Turn off button in the bottom right corner of the prompt.
  5. You will receive a final confirmation that personalized ads are now disabled. Click Got it to close the window.

Managing Specific Ad Categories Instead of Disabling Completely

If you prefer to keep personalized ads but want to stop seeing advertisements about specific sensitive topics (such as alcohol, dating, gambling, or weight loss), you do not have to turn the entire system off.

While your Personalized ads setting is still turned “On,” scroll down the My Ad Center page and look for the Customize ads tab. Here, you can select the Sensitive category and manually toggle off specific types of advertisements that you find objectionable. You can also review and modify the demographic information (like age, gender, and relationship status) that Google has assumed about you to ensure the ads you do see are more accurate.
